PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the prestigious trophy on 14 different times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after the French winger found the net in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the final moments to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
