RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
