Local Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were working "to solve the incident" and have requested to the community for tips.
An important official stated the incident made him without words and had to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in 2020.
